It's Gene's retirement day: he is starting a new life, in a new body. Every sixty-five years, Gene pays a visit to the nearest Next Time Clinic to clone himself.

As he gathers up synaptic impressions, ready for download to fresh neurons, the day takes a turn for the worse. The most anticipated day of his life is interrupted by an invasion: armored brutes intent on disintegrating the populace appear in the city.
